Features of the Lee Navigation
The Lee Navigation is a canal. Many buildings and structures were built by the side of canals to help with navigation.
LOCKS were built to enable boats to travel up and down hill.
BRIDGES let people, animals and other transport cross over the canal, these were called road and farm bridges.
Winding bridges were built when the towpath changed sides so that the horse could cross over without being untied.TOWPATHS were built beside canals for horses towing the barges and people to walk on. These were covered in cobblestones or cinders to prevent the horses' feet from slipping.

LOCK COTTAGES were built near to the locks as homes for the lock keepers who supervised the barges through the locks.
A WHARF is a platform on the canal side for loading and unloading the boats.
BOLLARDS
were built in many styles and were posts for boats to be tied to whilst moored
or waiting to enter a lock.
