How locks work:

Locks are a stretch of water with two gates, top and bottom.
The water level inside the lock can be raised or lowered to match the water height on either side of the lock.

1) If the lock is full, open bottom paddles
to lower water inside lock

2) Open the bottom gates and enter the lock closing
the gates behind

3) Close the bottom paddles and raise the top paddles to
allow water into the lock

4) The water in the lock rises and the boat goes up

5) When the water in the lock is the same height as the higher
level open top gate and take boat out of lock.
Then close the top paddles
